Mesut Ozil will start in Arsenal’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s north London derby, according to Gunners legend Kevin Campbell.

The former Germany international was left on the bench for Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in the Premier League last weekend.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a second-half winner to seal three points for Unai Emery’s side and end a run of three successive stalemates.

Ozil has endured a mixed start to life under Arsene Wenger’s successor, scoring one goal and making three assists in 10 Premier League games.

The 30-year-old produced his best performance of the season so far in a 3-1 victory over Leicester City at The Emirates in September after being handed the captain’s armband.

Ozil will be hoping to earn a spot in Emery’s team for the visit of Tottenham in the north London derby, knowing that a win would hoist them above third-placed Spurs.

Former Arsenal striker Campbell believes Ozil will return to the Arsenal starting XI for the visit of Spurs on Sunday.

“I think it’s smart management [to drop Ozil],” Campbell told Lovesport as quoted by the Evening Standard.

“We know that sometimes when it gets really physical, people accuse Mesut Ozil of not even turning up for the game.

“It’s away, it was going to be tough so he’s used his squad the best he can, he changed the system and Mesut Ozil is there on the bench if he needs him. This manager isn’t afraid to make tough decisions.

“The challenge is down right there for Mesut Ozil. I think he’ll definitely play [in the north London derby].

“He’s a big-game player. Sometimes the mindset is more difficult against the smaller teams because playing against the big teams, that’s the one you’re motivated for.

“I think there’s a bit of mind games going on with the manager and I think he’s challenged Mesut Ozil, and I think Ozil will show up.”

Ozil signed a new deal with Arsenal in February to secure his long-term future at the north London side.

In doing so, the World Cup winner became the club’s best-paid player in history, despite producing inconsistent performances throughout his Gunners career.
