Olivier Giroud is convinced that Arsenal still have chance of finishing third in the Premier League this season.

The Gunners gave their hopes of a top-four finish a boost with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Reading at The Emirates on Saturday.

That win enabled Arsenal to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea to just two points, with Arsene Wenger’s side still four points behind Tottenham.

But striker Giroud, who scored Arsenal’s third goal against the Royals, says the north Londoners still harbour hopes of finishing third and securing a direct route into the group stage of next season’s Champions League.

“We are confident,” Giroud told Arsenal’s website. “We are used to finishing the Premier League season well. And again this season we will do the same.

“There’s eight games to play and a lot of points to play for. I trust in our qualities. So I really think we can make fourth and maybe even third place if we continue to play like we did today.

“We take the games one by one. Spurs have to play against Manchester City and Chelsea so it’s hard games for them.

“But every game is difficult, we can see [on Saturday] that Chelsea lost in Southampton. We have to keep focused, concentrated and strong.”

Arsenal, who have a game in hand over Tottenham, travel to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League next Saturday.
