Arsene Wenger has poured cold water on talk of Arsenal signing Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January transfer window.

The Gunners were heavily linked with a move to sign the Gabon international on Thursday afternoon to create excitement amongst Arsenal supporters on social media.

According to the reports, Aubameyang was being lined up as a potential replacement for want-away Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez in the current transfer window.

The African forward has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League over the past two or three seasons but a proposed switch to England has failed to materialise.

Asked about Arsenal signing Aubameyang in the January transfer window, Wenger told a news conference on Friday morning: “No, it’s not a possibility.”

Sanchez has less than six months remaining on his current Arsenal contract to throw up the possibility of the Chile international leaving for nothing next summer.

The South American forward has been linked with a move to Premier League leaders Manchester City over the past 12 months or so.

Sanchez missed out on a transfer back in the summer after Arsenal failed to sign AS Monaco forward Thomas Lemar to replace their number seven on transfer deadline day.

However, Manchester City could make a fresh approach for Sanchez given injury problems to Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus.
