Unai Emery told to sell three Arsenal players and sign ‘quality’ 24-year-old
Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas wants Unai Emery to offload Denis Suarez, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi this summer
Charlie Nicholas says Unai Emery should offload Henrik Mkhitaryan, Alex Iwobi and Denis Suarez this summer, adding that the Arsenal manager should sign Adrien Rabiot.
The Gunners were unconvincing 3-1 winners against La Liga side Valencia in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday night thanks to goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Arsenal are in fifth place in the Premier League ahead of the 37th round of fixtures after the north London side suffered three successive losses to Crystal Palace, Wolves and Leicester City over the past two weeks.
Emery has a lot of work to do with the Arsenal squad this summer after the Spanish head coach inherited the current playing rota from Arsene Wenger last year aside from his five signings.
Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas believes the Gunners need to get rid of Mkhitaryan, Iwobi and Suarez, while the club legend would like to see Emery sign Rabiot.
“We need a box-to-box style midfield player and a player that can pick a pass too, so it is a matter of bringing in the right ones,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“I think you need to know your system, fit them in and see where it takes you. Adrien Rabiot will be a free-agent and been linked with different clubs, but I would take him.
“He has the quality and is of decent level, which Arsenal need.
“In attack, I like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette but will they win you the Premier League? I think they could.
“Between them, bearing in mind they haven’t actually played much together, their goal return has been a very good return.
“Arsenal have been relying on one striker for too long and now they have two so it does give me hope.
“I would sell Henrik Mkhitaryan and if I got the right money for Alex Iwobi I would sell him too. Denis Suarez has gone, that was a waste of time.”
Emery worked with Rabiot during his two-season stint in charge of PSG before he took over the reins of Arsenal last summer.
Rabiot has scored two goals and has made one assist in 14 games in Ligue 1 this term.
The France international hasn’t featured for PSG since December after falling out with his manager Thomas Tuchel.
