Gary Neville: Arsenal have a big issue, Alexis Sanchez’s head is turned
The Man United legend opens up about Alexis Sanchez's future at Arsenal
Gary Neville believes Alexis Sanchez’s head has been turned by Manchester City’s interest in the Arsenal forward.
The 25-year-old’s future has been a source of relentless debate over the past 18 months or so following Arsenal’s failure to tie down the South American to a new long-term contract at The Emirates.
Sanchez was close to a move to Premier League leaders Manchester City in the summer but a deal failed to materialise after Arsenal were unable to secure a replacement for the 28-year-old.
The Chile forward has often been praised for his work ethic during his three-season stint at Arsenal but Sanchez has failed to live up to his high standards in the 2017-18 campaign so far.
Sanchez has scored five times in 16 appearances in the Premier League this term amid talk of a potential move to Manchester City in the January transfer window.
Former Manchester United defender Neville is in no doubt that Sanchez’s head has been turned by talk of a potential move to the Premier League leaders.
“The one thing you would say about Sanchez is his commitment and work ethic is one of his greatest strengths,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“However, he has had his head turned. He has his dispute with the contract. Chile failed to qualify for the World Cup. There are issues with Sanchez. He has had his disappointments.”
The Chile international moved to the Gunners in a £35m deal from La Liga giants Barcelona in the 2014 summer transfer window after the forward opted to move to Arsenal ahead of interest from Liverpool FC.
