Arsenal should have signed Harry Maguire rather than Nicolas Pepe in the summer, according to Sky Sports pundit Lee Bowyer.

The Red Devils signed Maguire in a world-record deal for a defender from Premier League rivals Leicester City in the summer transfer window.

Maguire’s transfer fee eclipsed the £75m that Liverpool FC spent on Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.

Arsenal smashed their club record transfer to sign Ivory Coast international Pepe in a £71m deal from Ligue 1 side Lille.

Pepe hasn’t been able to have a big impact at the north London side following a return of one goal and two assists in 10 games.

The Ivorian attacker has performed better in the Europa League following a return of two goals and two assists.

Charlton Athletic boss Bowyer claimed that Arsenal should have signed Maguire rather than Pepe to improve the Gunners team.

“Defensively Arsenal are frail, they concede too many goals,” Bowyer told Metro.

“Their centre-halves have been a problem for years. It’s not just been this season, it’s been for a while now.

“But they would rather spend £75m on a winger [Pepe] than a centre-back. Harry Maguire would have been perfect for them, why didn’t they get him?”

Arsenal are in fifth spot in the Premier League table and six points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea FC.

Manchester United are a further five places and four points behind Arsenal following a meagre three victories in 11 games in the Premier League.

Emery signed six players in the summer transfer window, including David Luiz in an £8m deal from bitter rivals Chelsea FC.
