Arsene Wenger replies when asked about Arsenal signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan
The Arsenal manager opens up about the north London side's interest in Man United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Arsene Wenger has ousted himself as a fan of Henrikh Mkhitaryan amid growing speculation linking Arsenal with a move to sign the Manchester United midfielder in January.
The Armenia international has struggled to have a lasting impact on the Red Devils team following his move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in a £30m deal in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Mkhitaryan has scored 13 goals in 63 appearances in all competitions over the past 18 months or so at Old Trafford, including his strike in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Ajax in the Europa League final back in May 2016.
The attacking midfielder has only started one Premier League game since a 1-0 loss to defending Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in October as his subdued performances eroded Jose Mourinho’s faith in the No22.
Manchester United are rumoured to have offered Arsenal the chance to sign Mkhitaryan as part of a swap deal for want-away Chile international Alexis Sanchez in the January transfer window.
Asked about the possibility of signing Mkhitaryan during his media conference at London Colney on Thursday morning, Wenger said:
“Yes of course [I like him as a player].
“If it’s a possibility it’s because I like the player. The wages would not be a problem.”
Mkhitaryan won the League Cup and the Europa League in his first season at Manchester United but made a mere 24 appearances in the Premier League.
