Ian Wright has urged Arsenal to sign a defensive midfield specialist in the January transfer window.

The Gunners sold Alexis Sanchez in a swap deal with Manchester United as Henrikh Mkhitaryan completed a switch to The Emirates on Monday evening.

Arsenal have been without Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey over the past couple of months, while Francis Coquelin completed a move to La Liga side Valencia.

Granit Xhaka has struggled in the Premier League since a £33m move to Arsenal from German club Borussia Monchengladbach in the 2016 summer transfer window.

The Swiss midfielder has been regularly criticised for his inconsistent performances since his big-money switch to the German club.

Jack Wilshere has been one of the only positives for Arsenal in an otherwise difficult season for the north London outfit under Arsene Wenger.

But former Arsenal striker Wright believes Wenger needs to recruit a proven defensive midfielder to address one key weakness in his team.

“Arsenal definitely need a defensive midfielder who is a specialist at that job,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Not Xhaka. He isn’t a specialist.”

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira were in their pomp.

The Gunners spent a club-record fee on France international Alexandre Lacazette to sign the striker from Ligue 1 side Lyon.

Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac completed a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 in the summer.
