Arsenal are prepared to rival Manchester United for the signing of Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng, according to a report in Germany.
German media outlet Kicker, as quoted by Metro, is reporting that Manchester United are facing competition from League Cup runners up Arsenal and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The same article states that Bayern are asking for £44m to sell the former Manchester City defender in the current transfer window after a difficult World Cup for Boateng.
According to the same story, Boateng is open to a potential move to Manchester United or Arsenal before the start of the Premier League season.
The Bayern defender has experience of the Premier League under his belt following a 12-month stint at Manchester City in the 2010-11.
Boateng has won six Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and the Champions League during his seven seasons at the Allianz Arena.
The 29-year-old has scored eight times in 258 games for Bayern to establish himself as one of the top defenders in German football.
Manchester United have been left frustrated in their pursuit of a centre-half after struggling to get deals for Harry Maguire, Yerry Mina and Toby Alderweireld over the line.
Arsenal, meanwhile, will only sign a sixth player in the summer transfer window if a unique opportunity becomes available.
