Arsenal to make renewed effort to sign 31-year-old Premier League defender – report
Arsenal are set to step up their pursuit of West Brom defender Jonny Evans, according to reports
Arsenal are planning to make a fresh attempt to sign West Brom defender Jonny Evans, according to reports.
The Independent is reporting that Arsenal’s path to sign Evans has been cleared after Manchester City turned their attention to Athletic Bilbao centre-half Aymeric Laporte.
The Gunners are in the market to improve their defensive options after conceding 31 times in 24 games in the Premier League in the current campaign.
According to the same article, West Brom are demanding £20m for the former Manchester United defender who the Baggies signed from the Red Devils for an undisclosed fee in 2015.
Arsenal, though, could sign Evans for as little as £3m if West Brom are relegated at the end of the season due to a clause in the 31-year-old’s contract.
The Northern Ireland international has proven himself a competent Premier League defender during his long spell at Manchester United and his three seasons at West Brom.
Evans won three Premier League titles and the Champions League during a decorated spell at Old Trafford before completing a switch to the Baggies after falling out-of-favour under Louis van Gaal.
Arsenal signed Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez make the transfer to Old Trafford.
