Gilberto Silva explains why Alexis Sanchez should stay at Arsenal
The Arsenal legend believes Alexis Sanchez should show some loyalty to the north London club
Gilberto Silva has suggested that Alexis Sanchez should show loyalty to Arsenal given the Gunners provided the forward with a platform to establish himself as one of Europe’s top players.
The Chile international’s future has been a source of relentless speculation in the summer transfer window as Sanchez entered the final 12 months of his current contract.
Arsenal have failed to agree a new contract with the South American forward and the north London side are facing the worrying prospect of Sanchez leaving the club on a free transfer next summer.
Sanchez hasn’t been available for Arsenal’s opening two Premier League games amid ongoing speculation linking the 28-year-old with a move to title rivals Manchester City.
The former Udinese forward worked under Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola during his spell at Barcelona before Sanchez moved to Arsenal in a £35m deal in the 2014 summer transfer window.
Sanchez scored 24 times in 37 games in the Premier League last term but Arsenal missed out on a place in the Champions League following a fifth-place finish.
Former Arsenal midfielder Silva is optimistic that the Gunners could still reach an agreement with Sanchez about a contract extension.
“I hope Sanchez stays because it would be hard for the club to lose such a great player, after all that he’s done in the last few years,” said Silva, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“Arsenal gave Sanchez an opportunity, but of course on his side he has contributed a lot with his goals and ability.
“I hope that it ends well for both sides and that we keep hold of him, and it would also be a good decision for him because Arsenal are one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“Maybe he is considering things that we don’t know about, things from his point of view that he’s dealing with on a daily basis.”
Sanchez has won two FA Cup titles since moving to Arsenal in 2014.
