Arsenal plot sensational swoop to sign 27-year-old Man United star – report
Arsenal are keeping tabs on Manchester United's out-of-favour defender Chris Smalling, according to reports
Arsenal want to sign England international Chris Smalling from Manchester United, according to reports in the English media.
The Sun is reporting that the Red Devils defender has emerged as a target for the north London club in the 2017 summer transfer window.
Smalling’s future is looking increasingly uncertain at Old Trafford after Manchester United agreed a £30.7m deal to sign Victor Lindelof from Portuguese champions Benfica.
Naturally, the Sweden international’s arrival is expected to push Smalling further down the pecking order behind Eric Bailly and Marco Rojo.
Jose Mourinho criticised Smalling on a number of occasions about his fitness struggles as Manchester United coped with a defensive crisis last term.
According to the Sun, Phil Jones is also facing a bleak future at Old Trafford but Arsenal’s interest is in Smalling.
The England international moved to Manchester United in a £10m deal from Championship side Fulham in the 2010 summer transfer window.
Smalling has scored 13 times in 243 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United.
Arsenal are believed to be on the lookout for a number of new players this summer as Arsene Wenger bids to lead the Gunners to the title for the first time since 2004.
