Arsenal eye 21-year-old Italian to replace Aaron Ramsey – report
Arsenal have sent scouts to watch Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella, who is wanted by Juventus, according to a report
Arsenal are considering a move to sign Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella as a replacement for Aaron Ramsey, according to a report in Italy.
Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, as quoted by The Sun, is reporting that Arsenal have already sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old Serie A playmaker.
The same article states the Gunners are facing competition from Serie A duo AC Milan and AS Roma after the youngster’s brilliant start to the season.
According to the same story, reigning Serie A champions Juventus are also interested in the Cagliari starlet, who has scored one goal in the current campaign.
Arsenal have ended negotiations with Ramsey over a new contract despite the Wales international having less than 12 months left to run on his deal.
Ramsey will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs next January unless Arsenal decided to cut their losses and sell the Welshman in a cut-price deal in the transfer window.
Otherwise the versatile midfielder will be available on a free transfer next summer when his current contract with the north London side expires.
New Arsenal manager Unai Emery appears to be a fan of Ramsey after the former Cardiff City star started seven of their eight Premier League games so far.
Barella would be a relatively inexperienced replacement for Ramsey in the Arsenal team considering the midfielder has just three seasons in Serie A under his belt.
The number 18 came through the ranks at Cagliari before Barella went on a season-long loan at Serie B side Como in 2015-16.
He started to develop a glowing reputation after the Cagliari star scored six goals in 35 games in the Italian top flight last term.
Barella has scored one goal in eight games in Serie A this season before Cagliari-born star made his Italy debut in a 1-1 draw with Ukraine last week.
