Arsenal need to keep Ozil and Sanchez until the summer, warns ex-Gunners star
The Arsenal legend doesn't want to see Mesut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez leave in the January transfer window
Martin Keown has urged Arsenal to keep Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez at The Emirates until the end of the 2017-18 season.
The Gunners duo have been linked with a potential move away from the north London club at the end of the season given their contract situation.
Both Ozil and Sanchez have less than seven months remaining on their current deals to throw up the possibility of the Arsenal pair leaving in a cut-price deal.
Of course, the Chile and Germany internationals could leave for nothing in the summer when their Arsenal contracts finally come to an end.
Sanchez has been linked with a potential switch to Premier League leaders Manchester City over the past 12 months or so – and there is talk of a move to the Etihad Stadium in the January transfer window.
Ozil, on the other hand, has been linked with Arsenal’s bitter rivals Manchester United, having worked previously with current Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho for three seasons at Real Madrid.
Former Arsenal defender Keown doesn’t believe Arsene Wenger should cash in on the pair in January given the north London side’s precarious position in the top-four race.
“I am sure Arsene Wenger will look back on this period as one of the most difficult in his managerial career,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“He knows he needs Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil until the end of the season to get Arsenal back in the Champions League.
“There is little use selling them in January for a reduced fee only to strengthen a rival.
“But he has had to cajole performances from them while not upsetting the rest of the group.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term.
