Paul Merson: Quality 28-year-old would be sensational at Arsenal
Paul Merson backs Arsenal's reported pursuit of Henrikh Mkhitaryan this month
Paul Merson believes that Henrikh Mkhitaryan would step his game up at Arsenal if the Armenian ends up signing for the Gunners this month.
There has been relentless speculation linking the Armenia international with a transfer to The Emirates in recent days as part of the deal which would see Alexis Sanchez head to Manchester United.
Arsenal were linked with a move to sign Mkhitaryan in the past before he moved to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund back in 2016.
Mkhitaryan has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the first team at Old Trafford this season under Jose Mourinho despite starting the campaign strongly.
Former Arsenal star Merson is clearly a big fan of Mkhitaryan and would be happy to see him move to The Emirates in the January transfer window.
Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports, Merson said: “I watched him at Dortmund, where he was voted player of the season and scored plenty of goals.
“He has lost his way at Manchester United but if Arsenal get him, with the way they play and the way Arsene Wenger is going forward with attacking players, I think he will be a sensation.
“He is a great signing for Arsenal if they get him.
“Sanchez is top drawer, but to get that kind of quality in January is very rare. Mkhitaryan is one of the best in the Premier League. Any offensive player going to Arsenal under Arsene Wenger is a good move.”
Arsenal are currently preparing for their home Premier League clash against Crystal Palace at The Emirates on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners head into the game looking to get back to winning ways after the disappointment of their 2-1 loss to Bournemouth left them eight points adrift of the top four.
Arsenal finished fifth last season and missed out on Champions League qualification.
