Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer next summer, according to reports in the British media.
The Sun is reporting that the Gunners are ready to land the German midfielder when his contract at the Bundesliga club expires at the end of the season.
The same report states that a host of top European clubs have been keeping tabs on Goretzka in recent months but Arsenal are now reportedly the favourites to land the 22-year-old.
The story says that Arsenal are “confident” that they have won the race for the midfielder’s signature as Arsene Wenger already looks towards bolstering his squad next year.
It is also claimed that Gunners boss Wenger is a long-term admirer of Goretzka and has sent scouts to watch him in action for the German club on a number of occasions.
Goretzka is said to have also attracted interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in recent times.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are currently preparing for their Premier League clash against Southampton on Sunday lunchtime as they bid to get back to winning ways after their 3-1 loss to Manchester United in the top flight at The Emirates last weekend.
