Ray Parlour suggests Arsenal star could decide Unai Emery’s future
The Arsenal legend warns Unai Emery about Mesut Ozil's influence at the north London side
Ray Parlour has suggested that Mesut Ozil could have a big say on Unai Emery’s future at Arsenal.
The German midfielder has experienced a difficult first season under the Spanish head coach to raise questions about Ozil’s future.
Emery hasn’t selected Ozil for some of the north London side’s biggest games to suggest Arsene Wenger’s successor is reluctant to rely on the number 10.
Ozil has scored three times and has made one assist in 14 games in the Premier League to highlight his diminishing importance at The Emirates.
The 30-year-old became the best-paid player in the club’s history after the playmaker committed his future to Arsenal in February 2018.
However, the former Real Madrid midfielder has been linked with a potential exit following his lack of first-team opportunities this season.
Emery had issues with Brazil superstar Neymar during his final season in charge of Paris Saint-Germain before his appointment at Arsenal.
Former Gunners midfielder Parlour believes Ozil is an influential figure in the Arsenal dressing room who could prove problematic for Emery.
“It’s been a little bit like PSG with Neymar,” Parlour is quoted as saying by Metro.
“Neymar ended up getting Emery the sack. He lost the dressing room and Neymar was pulling the strings there. Maybe it could be the same at Arsenal.”
Asked about Ozil’s long-term future at the north London side under Emery, Parlour admitted that the German star could end up leaving Arsenal:
“I go back to the dilemma of what Arsenal have got. He’s on £350,000-a-week. Who is going to pay that sort of money?
“There’s got to be a time in your career, when you’re over 30 you know you’re on a slippery slope. You have to come to a decision.
“He could stick his heels in and sit out his contract, and say “play me when you want”. The players hold all the power.
“When you’re left out you want a reaction from the player – especially from training. Show the attitude you want to get back into the team somehow.
“I don’t know what he’s been like in training.”
Arsenal signed Ozil in a then club record £42.5m deal from Real Madrid in the 2013 summer transfer window.
