Unai Emery has admitted that he doesn’t know whether Arsenal’s summer signings have improved his Gunners squad.
The north London club were the busiest of the top-six teams in the Premier League this season after Arsenal signed five new players as well as bringing in a loanee for the Premier League campaign.
The Gunners started their summer spending with the underwhelming addition of Brazilian teenager Gabriel Martinelli from South American club Ituano.
Arsenal landed Saint-Etienne’s highly-rated defender William Saliba before the 18-year-old was immediately loaned back to the Ligue 1 side.
Dani Ceballos arrived in a season-long loan from Real Madrid following his impressive performance at the European Under-21 championship.
Arsenal finished the transfer window with a flurry after the Gunners spent a club record £72m on Lille winger Nicolas Pepe.
Kieran Tierney arrived in a £25m deal from Celtic on transfer deadline day, before David Luiz completed a surprise £8m switch from Chelsea FC.
Speaking at his media conference about whether Arsenal’s signings have improved his squad, Emery said: “I don’t know.
“Our idea is to improve on last year, to improve our work, improve our players, improve our challenge, to improve in achieving our target but I don’t know if we are better or not.
“I’m not more confident but I have more options.”
Arsenal were 1-0 winners against Newcastle United at St James’ Park last weekend courtesy of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s second-half winner.
The Gunners finished in fifth place and without a trophy in Emery’s first season in charge of Arsenal.
