Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger "not against" bringing in a new striker in January but feels Gunners can still challenge regardless

Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal can win the Premier League title this season without signing a striker in January – but has refused to rule out bolstering his front-line in the new year.

The Gunners are currently two points clear at the top of the table heading into Saturday’s clash with Southampton, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United in their last outing.

Much has been made of the north London side’s reliance on Olivier Giroud up front this term, with the out-of-form Nicklas Bendtner and Yaya Sanogo, who is currently injured, the only other recognised centre-forwards at the club.

However, although Wenger is “not against” bringing in a new striker in January, he feels that the fit-again Theo Walcott and the soon-to-be-available Lukas Podolski can easily be deployed up front if necessary.

“Yes, I think we can win the title without signing a striker,” said Wenger. “Podolski is not back but he shouldn’t be too far now. They make it less critical to sign a striker.

“Look I am not against it [making signings in January]. I don’t say I never make a mistake – I’ve certainly made some. But sometimes it is because we didn’t sign the right player.

“If somebody’s doing well somewhere the clubs do not necessarily want to sell him and they can wait until the end of the season to sell him. Most of the time it’s because we didn’t find [the right player].

“Theo gives us qualities that other players haven’t got. It’s a different option. Theo also gives us an opportunity to be a mobile striker. [But] if we lose Giroud today, we have nobody with bodyweight up front.”
