Robert Pires has urged Arsene Wenger to keep spending big after he smashed Arsenal’s transfer record to land Mesut Özil.

The north London club splashed out £42.5m to bring the Germany playmaker to north London from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day.

Arsenal have enjoyed an impressive start to the Premier League season and currently top the table after seven games.

But Gunners legend Pires believes that his former club should continue to signal their ambition in the transfer market as they look to end their eight-year wait for a major trophy.

“If you look at all the successful clubs who won titles and trophies, they always buy after they have been successful,” Pires told the Daily Mirror.

“There is no question that Arsenal are at a high level at this moment. They are playing to the kind of football played during my time at the club. And Ozil – well, he is world-class.

“But there appears to be a new financial philosophy at Arsenal now. Arsene can spend money, more than he has been able to do before and I believe he should add to the squad when he can.”
