Gerard Pique has come out in defence of Cesc Fabregas after the midfielder was singled out for criticism by some Barcelona fans during last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao.

The 26-year-old former Arsenal captain was jeered by sections of the Camp Nou faithful on Sunday as the La Liga side sealed a home win.

Speculation linking Fabregas with a move back to Emirates Stadium has gathered pace in recent weeks amid reports he is unhappy at the club.

I think it is a mistake to focus on just one player

But Pique has called on Barca fans not to focus their criticism on just one player.

“It isn’t good to have fans whistling you – particularly at home,” said Pique.

“I think it is a mistake to focus on just one player. Blame it on the players, OK, but not just Cesc.

“The season has not been good and I think we are all part of a group that haven’t quite got things right.”

Fabregas has scored eight goals and made 12 assists in 32 La Liga appearances for Barcelona so far this season.
