Arsenal transfers: ‘Gunners should spend big on Christian Benteke’
Arsenal transfers: Mark Lawrenson believes the Gunners should sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke in the January window
Arsenal should pay whatever Aston Villa want for Christian Benteke in January transfer window, according to former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson.
Arsene Wenger has been forced to rely on striker Olivier Giroud in the early stages of the season following injuries to Germany international Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for Juventus target man Fernando Llorente and Real Madrid’s struggling forward Karim Benzema in recent weeks.
However, Liverpool legend Lawrenson reckons the north London side should make a big offer to sign 22-year-old Benteke to boost their Premier League title bid.
“Their chief executive, Ivan Gazidis, has made it known that they are looking at signing another striker in January,” Lawrenson wrote in the Mirror.
“If I were Wenger I’d give Aston Villa whatever they want for Christian Benteke.
“What an option he would give them – particularly with the chances they would create for him.
“He needn’t worry about not getting game-time during the second half of the season in World Cup year. Olivier Giroud can’t possibly play every game with Arsenal fighting for silverware on several fronts.
“Benteke would share the load, bully defences and give the Gunners the depth up front that they need.”
Villa striker Benteke scored 19 goals in 34 appearances in his first season in the Premier League.
