Nicklas Bendtner says he was “extremely disappointed” when Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger prevented the Dane from leaving the club this summer.

The 25-year-old made a substitute appearance as the Premier League leaders suffered a 1-0 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Bendtner spent the last two seasons on loan at Sunderland and then Juventus, before Wenger opted to keep him at the club despite the forward being linked with Crystal Palace and Hull City.

“I got extremely disappointed when he (Wenger) called, because I was set to move on,” Bendtner told Danish newspaper BT.

“Actually I thought they didn’t want to keep me. I had everything in place. There were three clubs who were just waiting that I would accept one of their offers.”

Bendtner acknowledged that he will have to fight extra hard to win over the Arsenal manager amid competition for a first-team place from Olivier Giroud.

He added: “I have to fight double in every match and I have got to score, to prove that I should get the chance from the start next time.

“That is difficult since I have hardly played for a year due to injuries, and neither have I had a pre-season together with the others in the team.”
