Peter Coates says he won’t deny Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic the chance to join a “top club” in the summer.

The Serbia international has been heavily linked with a host of Premier League sides, including Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, in recent months.

The 25-year-old was one of Stoke’s most consistent performers during a difficult season for the Britannia Stadium outfit, with manager Tony Pulis leaving the Potters earlier this month.

Although Stoke chairman Coates, who appointed Mark Hughes as Pulis’ successor on Thursday, does believe Begovic will be at the club for the start of the new season, the Potters chief say he wouldn’t prevent the shot-stopper from securing a big move in the future.

“Asmir is a super professional player,” Coates told Sky Sports News.

“We like him very much. He is a top, top goalkeeper. I think he is as good as anybody in the Premier League.

“But he is also ambitious. If top clubs come for your players, I do not think you can deny them the opportunity. That is my view.

“But it would depend very much on the money being right. We are not looking to sell him. We are not expecting to sell him. We expect him to be our goalkeeper next season.”

The Bosnia international has made 93 appearances for Stoke after completing a £3.25m switch to the Potters from Portsmouth in 2010.
