Arsenal transfers: No club would turn down Rooney, admits Wenger

Arsene Wenger has revealed his admiration for Wayne Rooney amid continuing uncertainty over the Manchester United striker’s future.

The 27-year-old England international has been heavily linked with an Old Trafford exit after it emerged that he handed in a transfer request late on last season.

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have both been linked with a move to sign the forward, who scored 16 goals in 36 games for the Red Devils last season.

And Gunners boss Wenger appears to have left the door open to a possible bid to lure the striker to Emirates Stadium.

“Rooney could be an interesting player for everybody in the world, who would turn him down?” Wenger told Al Jazeera.

“David Moyes’s first challenge is to go in to Manchester and bridge the gap between him and Rooney.

“If that is feasible or not depends on his personality and if Rooney bears a grudge or not, we will see. It will be interesting to see how that will be handled.”

Wenger’s comments come after departing Red Devils chief executive David Gill said that he expects Rooney to remain at the club.

Gill said: “As Sir Alex said at his last press conference, that’s an issue for [new manager] David Moyes.

“I’m confident he will be there next season. He’s a great, great player and the club doesn’t want to lose its star players.”
