Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil needs to be more consistent, says Per Mertesacker
Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker says his compatriot Mesut Ozil needs to be more consistent next season
Per Mertesacker admits Arsenal’s club-record signing Mesut Ozil needs to be more consistent.
The Germany international returned to Arsene Wenger’s starting line-up for their 3-0 victory over Hull City after a month on the sidelines nursing a hamstring injury.
He has shown some great skills but he needs to be more consistent
Ozil has scored four goals and made eight assists in 23 Premier League appearances this season following his record £42.5m move from Real Madrid last summer.
However, the 25-year-old has been criticised after a run of 15 games which saw the former Los Blancos star score once and create two goals, struggling to have an impact.
But Arsenal centre-half Mertesacker backed his team-mate to be much better in his second Premier League season.
“I think the second season will be much better for him because he’s a fantastic player,” Mertesacker told Arsenal’s website.
“He has shown some great skills but he needs to be more consistent, which makes a difference at the end.
“Sometimes it’s good to get criticism with the negative points – if you are intelligent enough, and he is an intelligent footballer. I think he will sort that problem out.”
