Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal have been “unlucky” in some games this season ahead of their crunch clash against Everton at The Emirates on Tuesday.

The Spain international scored from the spot in the Gunners’ 3-1 victory over Norwich City on Saturday, helping Arsene Wenger’s side move into third place ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

That win was Arsenal’s eighth in 10 games in the Premier League, but the 29-year-old reckons the Gunners have been unfortunate in some of their top-flight matches earlier in the campaign.

And the former Everton midfielder has urged Arsenal not to relinquish their chance of securing Champions League football after turning around their season in the past two months.

“We have been unlucky in some games because we haven’t deserved to lose the games as we’ve done,” Arteta told Sky Sports.

“When we got knocked out of the FA Cup, out of 100 games, you’d only lose that game the way it happened. But it happened.

“But the only thing we have to fight for now is the Champions League. Now it’s in our hands so we can’t miss it.”

Arteta has scored 12 goals in 73 appearances for Arsenal after completing a £10m move to the Gunners from Everton in 2011.
