Wojciech Szczesny has hailed the return of “terrific” Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini.

The France midfielder has missed the north London side’s last three Premier League games due to suspension after his sending off in a 2-2 draw at Southampton.

Mathieu has been terrific for us this season

Flamini’s return should help add more bite to the Gunners midfielder as Arsene Wenger’s men look to avenge last weekend’s 5-1 loss at Anfield on Sunday.

And Szczesny believes the 29-year-old’s return will allow the likes of Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere greater freedom to help striker Olivier Giroud.

“Mathieu has been terrific for us this season,” Szczesny is quoted as saying by the London Evening Standard.

“He gives us that little bit more stability at the back and gives some of the other players more freedom to attack.

“It’s good to have him back.”

Jose Mourinho and Wenger have both claimed that Liverpool have an advantage in the title race as the Reds aren’t competing in Europe this season.

But the Arsenal goalkeeper dismissed the notion that he would prefer to be in Liverpool’s position.

“I wouldn’t give up playing European football – it’s integral. Whether they have an advantage or not, I don’t know.

“You can also look at it as gaining experience when you do play in the Champions League.

“Maybe they will have more energy but I wouldn’t swap it.”
