Arsene Wenger has backed Brendan Rodgers to bring long-term success to Liverpool ahead of Arsenal’s clash with the Reds on Saturday.

Wenger’s men host the Merseysiders looking for a win to keep their place at the top of the Premier League table, with Liverpool two points behind in third place.

Rodgers guided Liverpool to a seventh-place finish in his first season in charge at Anfield last season and the Northern Irishman is aiming to help the Reds break back into the top four this term.

“He’s at a massive club and in his first year he had ups and downs but you could still feel, even in the first year, that he had a style of play he wanted to push through,” said Wenger.

“He manages that now in a more consistent way and you can see that the results are positive.”

Wenger also insisted that both Arsenal and Liverpool should be considered among as many as five other teams that are capable of winning the Premier League title this season.

The Gunners have not lifted the top-flight trophy since their famous unbeaten triumph back in 2003-04, while Liverpool last won the league back in 1989-90.

But the Frenchman believes that both sides’ flying starts to the season means they are capable of ending their waits for the trophy.

“Yes, of course [Arsenal and Liverpool are contenders],” he said.

“I think we are title contenders and Liverpool as well – and there are four or five other teams who will be title contenders this year.”
