Arsene Wenger defends Mesut Ozil ahead of Man United clash
Arsene Wenger defends Mesut Özil following the Arsenal playmaker's poor performance at Liverpool on Saturday
Arsene Wenger has defended the form of Mesut Ozil after the Arsenal playmaker came in for criticism for his performance in Saturday’s 5-1 thrashing at Liverpool.
The 25-year-old playmaker has failed to continue his impressive start to the season with the Gunners following his arrival from Real Madrid last summer in a club-record deal.
Ozil, who has scored four goals and made eight assists in 20 Premier League appearances this season, was substituted after an hour following a quiet display at Anfield.
For me he’s an exceptional player. He was like everybody else on Saturday
But Wenger has come out in defence of the Germany international ahead of Arsenal’s showdown with Manchester United at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
“He works very hard to adapt to the Premier League,” said Wenger.
“For me he’s an exceptional player. He was like everybody else on Saturday [in the 5-1 defeat to Liverpool]. He works very hard in training to improve.
“He knows when he is not good enough he will get questioned – that is normal.”
The Frenchman added: “I think the Liverpool game was an accident and we want to treat it like that.”
