Arsene Wenger: Mesut Özil has ‘a lot’ of room for improvement at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has insisted that there is plenty more to come from Mesut Ozil at Arsenal.

The Germany playmaker has been ever-present in the Gunners’ starting line-up since his £42.5m transfer to north London from Real Madrid in the summer, scoring three goals and making five assists in all competitions.

And Wenger is convinced that Arsenal fans are yet to see the best of the 25-year-old.

“First of all he is a hugely talented player,” said Wenger ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League clash against Marseille on Tuesday night.

“He just arrived here three months ago and overall he did not have the best of preparations for the league.

“He is a young player, he is 25 years old so of course there is a lot of room for improvement for him.

“We have plenty of players who can take the ball and play, and because he plays in the central part of the pitch the ball goes through him. But we don’t put any special responsibility on him.

“Maybe he feels a bit more pressure to do that. But we just want the game to be played like we see it and we do not put any special responsibility on him. Everybody in our team can deliver great balls.”

Arsenal v Marseille: Pre-match facts

• It is the third successive season that Arsenal have faced Ligue 1 opponents in the Champions League. A year ago on matchday five they beat Montpellier 2-0 to register their first win in the competition at home to Ligue 1 sides.

• In the four previous Champions League games Arsenal had lost two and drawn two, although their overall home record against French visitors is W4 D3 L2.

• Marseille have only recorded one victory in 11 visits to England, beating Liverpool 1-0 in the 2007-08 Champions League group stage. They have lost six of the other 10 games.

• Mathieu Flamini began his career at Marseille making his senior debut in December 2003. At the end of that season he joined Arsenal for the first time.
