Wenger hails ‘intelligent and committed’ Arteta after Arsenal win
Arsene Wenger praises the "intelligent and committed" Mikel Arteta after Arsenal beat Sunderland
Arsene Wenger insists that Mikel Arteta’s solid performances for Arsenal do not go unnoticed, even if the Spaniard rarely makes the headlines for his displays.
The Spanish midfielder played the full 90 minutes on Saturday as the Gunners returned to winning ways with a 4-1 triumph over Sunderland at Emirates Stadium.
Sometimes his performances are not highlighted, but we notice them
Arteta was suspended for Wednesday night’s 2-0 defeat by Bayern Munich, and Wenger was full of praise for the 31-year-old after the win over the Black Cats.
“He is an extremely intelligent player, focused and committed,” said Wenger.
“These three qualities together make him an exceptional player and he understands everything that is going on on the pitch.
“I agree with you that sometimes his performances are not [highlighted], but we notice them.”
Meanwhile, Arteta himself insisted that the Gunners are still in with a good chance of winning the Premier League title after Saturday’s win left them second in the table and a point behind leaders Chelsea.
“We wanted to show that we are really committed, that we are up for it and we played some fantastic football,” said Arteta.
“The reaction of the team was really good, really convincing. We won the game and happy to be where we are.
“We have every chance to win [the title]. We’re going to have it really tough from now on but for three or four teams it’s going to be really tough.
“We just need to keep going and see where we are at the end of April because that’s when everything is going to be decided.”
