Ashes 2013-14: England bowler Chris Tremlett admits the tourists endured a frustrating opening day in Perth
Chris Tremlett admitted England had a frustrating opening day of their tour after a Western Australia Chairman’s XI finished 369-4 in Perth.
The tourists, without skipper Alastair Cook who is nursing a back injury, debuted their towering attack but Boyd Rankin and company struggled on a “pretty slow” pitch.
“It was a frustrating day as a unit. We were pretty inconsistent,” Tremlett told ECB’s website.
“I thought we all showed some good signs at times, but I think we were all a little bit rusty. We struggled with our lengths.”
Chris Lynn, a guest from Queensland, made 104 runs before eventually being dismissed as all four of Western Australia’s opening batsmen managed to notch up half centuries.
James Anderson took the day’s first wicket when he dismissed Brad Harris, whilst part-time spinner Joe Root sent Luke Towers on his way, before Boyd and Ben Stokes both secured scalps of their own.
And Tremlett pointed to the pitch as a reason for England’s lacklustre start to their tour of Australia.
“It was pretty slow – not what we were expecting compared to what the net conditions have been like the last couple of days,” Tremlett added.
“But I guess that’s no excuse really. It’s about adjusting to conditions quickly. It’s down to a bit of rustiness.”
England take on Michael Clarke’s men in the first Test in Brisbane on 21 November.
