Ashes 2013: Stuart Broad admits it was an "amazing" day of cricket after England beat Australia by 74 runs to win the Test series
Stuart Broad hailed an “amazing” day of cricket after the England bowler’s inspired spell helped the hosts win the Ashes thanks to a 74-run fourth Test win.
Australia appeared to be heading towards victory at Chester-Le-Street as the tourists moved on to 168-2 after England had set a target of 299 runs earlier on Monday.
However, Tim Bresnan’s dismissal of David Warner (71) sparked an Australia collapse as he also sent Shane Watson back to the pavilion, while Broad secured a staggering eight wickets.
But fittingly, the 27-year-old won the Ashes as he dismissed Nathan Lyon, and he praised his bowling partnership with Bresnan that turned the tided in Durham.
“It was amazing really – an interesting day’s cricket. Bressie’s [Tim Bresnan] runs were vital, but Australia were brilliant in the middle spell and we had to regroup at tea,” Broad told BBC Sport.
“There were lots of conversations about how we could get Australia on the front foot and move the ball sidewards. We executed it – and then just prayed for some sunshine.”
He added: “I found a nice rhythm at the top end and I wanted to be really aggressive. We lacked intensity in the middle period and Cooky [captain Alastair Cook] threw me the ball and said ‘spice it up a bit’.
“I got a good partnership going with Tim Bresnan, we tried to hit the deck as hard as we could and we managed to do it.”
