Paul Lambert was in no mood to make excuses after watching his Aston Villa side suffer a comprehensive defeat by Stoke City.

Christian Benteke gave the home side the lead in the fifth minute at Villa Park, but Stoke fought back as Peter Odemwingie and Peter Crouch made it 2-1, with Steven Nzonzi adding a third just before half-time.

We showed real personality and desire

Geoff Cameron then added further gloss to the scoreline to earn Stoke their first Premier League away win since August.

“We got off to a really good start and at times we looked OK, we lost a couple of lads to injury but still we were second best,” Lambert said.

“The Chelsea game was totally different, the atmosphere and everything, and you come back down to earth again. Maybe that game took a bit more out of them than we realised.”

Meanwhile, Stoke boss Mark Hughes was delighted with his side’s all-round performance.

“We had a poor start and conceded a goal in the first five minutes but after that I thought we were excellent,” said Hughes.

“We showed real personality and desire to get on the ball and make things happen. We played really well.”
