Paul Lambert reflected on an “excellent” performance after watching his Aston Villa side down Cardiff City to move up to 10th place in the table.

After a goalless first half, the home side took the lead in the 76th minute through Leandro Bacuna’s spectacular free-kick, before Libor Kozak’s header secured the points.

Villa had gone seven-and-a-half hours without scoring a goal before Bacuna’s strike, and Lambert lavished praise on his side after the final whistle.

“The players battled and were very good,” Lambert told BBC Sport. “Leandro’s free-kick was fabulous. His goal against Manchester City was brilliant but I think that surpasses it.

“I thought we deserved to win the game. I knew it would be a tough game so it’s a good win.

“The clean sheet gives us confidence going forward and I was really pleased with the result. The lads were excellent.”

Meanwhile, Cardiff boss Malky Mackay admitted his side were beaten by a moment of brilliance from Bacuna.

“Ultimately it was a good goal that made the difference,” said Mackay.

“I thought we had played well until then. We had plenty of possession and were comfortable until that point. It was a poor free-kick to give away.”
