Aston Villa 3 Hull City 1: Paul Lambert hails Andreas Weimann after a crucial victory
Paul Lambert hailed Andreas Weimann as a natural finisher after the Austrian edged Aston Villa nearer to safety thanks to victory over fellow strugglers Hull City.
The Birmingham side took a first-minute lead through Ashley Westwood before Hull were level after Jordan Bowery’s own goal at Villa Park.
I knew this was going to be a hard game but I thought we were excellent
But Lambert’s side were two goals clear by half-time as Austria international Weimann scored netted twice in the space of four minutes.
Villa’s victory means they move six points clear of the drop zone and will be safe if Norwich City fail to beat Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday.
“They were two great headers,” Lambert told Sky Sports News.
“I thought (Nathan) Baker done great to win the first headers but Weimann is a natural finisher. We have lost big players like (Christian) Benteke but Andy has come up trumps.
“I’ve been involved in some really big games but that’s right up there with them. If they can come through that then they can come through most things.”
Lambert paid credit to the Villa supporters who stood by their team despite difficult periods this season.
“They (the fans) were excellent but I had a feeling they would be. They played a huge part in our win.
“Sometimes you get harshly criticised here; they are all young lads learning their trade but I thought the fans were excellent today.
Lambert added: “It is a big, big club with a massive fan base and you’ve got to give them something. I knew this was going to be a hard game but I thought we were excellent. They came with great enthusiasm for the game. They were fantastic.”
