Manuel Pellegrini admitted Manchester City “threw away” a certain victory after his side were stunned by Aston Villa.

The in-form Yaya Toure had volleyed in the opener on the stroke of half-time, but Karim El Ahmadi’s close-range effort drew the home side level shortly after the restart.

Edin Dzeko headed City back into the lead five minutes later, but Villa equalised again through Leandro Bacuna’s free-kick.

And Paul Lambert’s men sealed a famous win when Andreas Weimann raced through and slotted in with 15 minutes to go.

“We played very well and deserved to win, but in five minutes we threw away everything good we did in the rest of the match,” said Pellegrini, whose side squandered the chance to move top of the table and remain without an away win this term.

“The way we lost this game was incredible. We led twice, and we had control of the game.”

Asked about his side’s defending, he added: “Of course [I’m angry] but I must be patient.

“It is important to keep calm. In general I was very happy with the way my team played today and we deserved a different score.”

Meanwhile, match-winner Weimann was thrilled to help Villa to victory as the Birmingham outfit moved up to ninth place in the table.

“Scoring the winner against Manchester City, you don’t do that every day – it is incredible,” said Weimann.

“We just beat someone who is meant to win the league, so this was a massive win for us.”
