Andy Murray believes he is in top shape as he bids to reach a second consecutive Australian Open final.

The British No1 made light work of his first-round match in Melbourne on Tuesday, beating world No53 Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-3 6-1 6-3.

Murray’s preparation for the year’s first Grand Slam went swimmingly as he retained his title at the Brisbane International last week.

And the 25-year-old Scot feels he is as fit as ever as he gears up for his second-round match against Joao Sousa of Portugal.

“You train hard and prepare the best you can and then see where it takes you when you get into the tough situations, the hard conditions,” said Murray.

“Especially here, it can be extremely hot, which it probably will be on Thursday. Then throughout the year you make adjustments based on how you’re feeling.

“But I trained hard to get ready for this event.”

Murray admitted he suffered from nerves ahead of his first-round match but he believes that is a positive sign.

“I don’t think there’s anyone that doesn’t [get nervous],” he said. “I think nerves are a good thing. If you aren’t nervous, it shows that you’re really not that bothered.

“The nerves can be there for 10 or 15 minutes before you go on the court or the beginning of the match or the evening beforehand. They can affect you at different times.

“But it shows that you care, and that’s the positive you take out of it. Often when you are nervous, you can play your best tennis.”
