Australian Open betting odds: Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and more

Novak Djokovic booked his place in the Australian Open second round on Tuesday to continue his charge for an eighth title in Oz.

The world number one is looking to win the tournament for a record eighth time and lift his third successive Grand Slam trophy.

Djokovic finished off 2018 in spectacular fashion after the Serbian beat Kevin Anderson and Juan Martin del Potro in the Wimbledon and US Open finals.

Only Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have won more Grand Slam titles than the 30-year-old – and the veteran Swiss player is the defending champion at the Australian Open.

Djokovic hasn’t won the Australian Open since 2016 when he beat Great Britain’s Andy Murray in straight sets.

Unsurprisingly, the Australian open odds view Djokovic as favorite to win the year’s first Grand Slam title.

Murray has been one of the biggest talking points of the tournament so far after the Scot confirmed that the Australian Open could prove to be his final Major tournament.

The 31-year-old lost in five sets to 22nd seed Roberto Bautista Agut to limp out in the first round and end his faint hopes of winning the Major.

If Murray doesn’t play in a Grand Slam tournament again, he will finish with two Wimbledon titles, a US Open crown and Olympic gold medal.

However, the Scot fell short three times in the Australian Open final – losing to Djokovic twice and Federer.

The 37-year-old could well prove to be Djokovic’s biggest rival for the Grand Slam title, having won the tournament at the start of 2018.

Federer got past Denis Istomin in straight sets and will face Murray’s compatriot Dan Evans in the second round in pursuit of an eighth title.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner won the Australian Open in 2017 and 2018 (beating Rafael Nadal and Marin Cilic) to make him second favourite to win the trophy for the third successive year.

Of course, his old rival Nadal is the third favourite but his odds are considerably larger than Djokovic and Federer’s.

The world number two has only won the Australian Open on one occasion when he beat Federer in five sets in 2009.

Nadal has reached four further finals in Melbourne but lost to Federer (2017), Djokovic (2012) and Wawrinka (2014).

World Tour Finals winner Alexander Zverev is the fourth favourite and is the youngest member of the top four seeds.
