The British focus may have been on Andy Murray’s remarkable display against Richard Gasquet but there was disappointment elsewhere as Elena Baltacha’s participation at Roland Garros came to an end.

Baltacha, the British number one, was easily beaten by the eighth seed Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-0, 7-5.

“I wish there was another set,” said Baltacha the defeat. “It was kind of like the momentum started going my way. It would have been nice to see what would have happened had there been a third.”

Elsewhere Serena Williams battled through a difficult encounter with Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele. The American struggled in the first set against the 20-year-old with William’s young opponent the better performer.

However, showing true champion spirit, Williams showed grit to claim the first set 7-6 and emerged victorious in a more comfortable second, dropping just two games.

Caroline Wozniacki surged into the second round, barely breaking sweat against the Russian Alla Kudryavtseva. Wozniacki’s opponent was clearly suffering from a lack of confidence and the third seed subsequently raced to a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

The Danish number one looked confident throughout and showed no signs of the ankle injury which had forced her to retire mid-tournament last week.

Elena Dementieva beat Petra Martic with the fifth seed winning 6-1, 6-1 and Italy’s Francesca Schiavone, the 17th seed, came from a set down to beat Russia’s Regina Kulikova 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

In the men’s draw defending champion Roger Federer progressed into the second round after a relatively straightforward match against Peter Luszak. The world number one sealed a 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 victory on the Philippe Chatrier court.

Novak Djokovic endured a minor scare in his first round tie. The Serbian dropped the second set against Evgeny Korolev before recovering to win in four sets 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Amongst the other seeded players to feature on day two of Roland Garros were John Isner, Stansislas Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych. All three will be present in the second round with Isner and Wawrinka winning in three sets while Berdych saw of Chilean Jorge Aguilar in five sets.
