Barça’s Cesc Fàbregas: I had to step up a level after leaving Arsenal

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fàbregas admits he had to step up a level after swapping Arsenal for the La Liga champions in 2011

Cesc Fàbregas believes he had to “move up a level” to match Barcelona’s standards after joining the Catalan side from Arsenal.

The Spain international completed a much-hyped £35m move back to his boyhood club in August 2011 from the Gunners, calling time on a eight-year spell on north London.

Fàbregas has been in and out of the Barcelona starting line-up since re-joining the Catalan side, but the 26-year-old still managed to score 11 goals as Barça won back their La Liga crown last season.

“I think moving to Barcelona was a very important step for me, because of the system and also because you’re playing with the best, which means you automatically have to move up a level to match the standards they set,” Fàbregas told Fifa’s website.

“You learn something in every training session and you have to give your very best.”

Fàbregas started Spain’s 2-1 victory over Uruguay in their opening Confederations Cup group match, setting up Roberto Soldado for the defending world champions’ second strike.

And the Barcelona midfielder, who was part of the squad who won back-to-back European championships and the World Cup, revealed he wants to be a fist-team regular at international level.

“I hope to be more involved. I’ve been with the team for six years now but have never felt like a starter,” he added.

“Yes, I’ve had playing time here and there, but it’s hard to really show your worth when you have so little time.”
