Basel 1 Chelsea 0: Player ratings as Mohamed Salah scores the winner in Switzerland but the Blues still reach the last 16
Basel
Yann Sommer The Swiss stopper was not needed as Chelsea failed to trouble him and commanded his box well. 5/10
Kay Voser The full-back possessed authority when called upon and got forward on occasions, more so in the first half, but struggled to attack after the break as Chelsea tightened up. 5
Fabian Schar Can be pleased with how he helped to shut out Chelsea and could have scored late on but his near post strike edged wide. 5
Ivan Ivanov Thought he had put Basel 1-0 up but for Mikel’s goal-line clearance. Was a dominant figure at the back for the hosts. 6
Taulant Xhaka Early free-kick troubled Cech and made a number of positive runs to help his side up the park. 6
Serey Die Poor show of respect to the referee but did well apart from that. Almost scored twice and deserved to be on the winning side. 5
Mohamed Salah (Man of the match) The Egyptian produced a man-of-the-match performance and was a constant threat for Chelsea even before his cool finish in the closing minutes. 8
Mohamed Elneny Was energetic and had some nice link-up play with Salah to get the fans on their feet. 6
Fabian Frei As at Stamford Bridge, he went about his business quietly and ensured danger for Chelsea with his clever passing. 6
Valentin Stocker Struggled early on but came more in to the game and held the ball up well. 5
Marco Streller Was unlucky not to score with his shot at the near post but did not produce the movement required to create more chances. 5

Chelsea
Petr Cech Produced a key save early on from a Xhaka free-kick, and later, superbly adjusted to tip over Salah’s strike from the centre of the box but was helpless for the Egyptian’s winner. 6
Branislav Ivanovic Caught sleeping for Basel’s goal and did not attack as much as he did in the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge but was energetic throughout prior to the late drama. 4
Gary Cahill Again produced a solid performance and set the tone early on with a number of telling interceptions. 6
John Terry Like Cahill, the Chelsea skipper was impressive when called upon and made it difficult for Basel to make any clear cut opportunities. 5
Cesar Azpilicueta Further strengthened his claim to be ahead of Ashley Cole in the pecking order and superbly tracked back several times to win the ball back in Chelsea’s defensive third. 7
John Obi Mikel Helped out the Chelsea defence to make it difficult for Basel but did not assert his presence on the match. 5
Frank Lampard Got forward on occasions but could not find the killer ball and had a free-kick in the last ten minutes but could not produce the delivery. 5
Ramires Did his best but could not interchange well with his team-mates up the pitch on a night where nothing clicked for the visitors. 5
Oscar Very quiet and was replaced by Jose Mourinho in the second half. 4
Willian Tracked back impressively but the Brazilian did not have the attacking spark the London side needed on a tough night for the club. 5
Samuel Eto’o Poor and did not offer Chelsea an attacking outlet before coming off injured in the first half. 4
