Arsene Wenger branded Arjen Robben a “very good diver” after Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich.

With Arsenal trailing 2-0 from the first leg of the last 16 tie, Bastian Schweinsteiger gave Bayern the lead from close range at the Allianz Arena before Lukas Podolski fired high into the net from close range to level the score on the night.

Thomas Mueller had a late penalty saved after Robben went down in the box under a Laurent Koscielny challenge as the Bundesliga side won 3-1 on aggregate.

Good luck to Bayern, they are a good side but I think this season they were more vulnerable than last year

And Wenger said: “Robben is very good at getting the maximum out of nothing. He’s a great player and as well a very good diver. But that’s part of it.”

The Frenchman, whose Arsenal side will now focus on the Premier League and FA Cup, continued: “The regret we have is now that in the last five years we’ve played twice Barcelona, twice Bayern – and every time when these teams are at the top of their game.

“If you look at our record in Germany, we have not lost here for a long time. It’s at home where we were caught.

“Especially this season, the decision to send our goalkeeper off at home was a big part in that tie. It was on the same player [Robben] who got the penalty again tonight – that’s the regret we have.

“Spirit-wise we gave everything until the end. Good luck to Bayern, they are a good side but I think this season they were more vulnerable than last year.”

There was further bad news for Arsenal as Wenger confirmed that Mesut Ozil is set to be out of a number of weeks with a “quite serious” hamstring injury.

The Germany international was substituted at half-time, and Wenger added: “Mesut has a hamstring problem. It looks quite serious. I don’t know how long he will be out for.

“We have to have a scan tomorrow to see how bad it is. For sure he’s out for at least a few weeks. I hope it’s not too bad.”
