Bolton 1 Everton 2: David Moyes relieved to secure FA Cup progress

David Moyes admitted that it was a relief to see Everton book their place in the FA Cup fifth-round after edging past Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.

The Toffees went ahead in the 18th minute when Victor Anichebe’s shot was deflected past Bolton goalkeeper Victor Anichebe’s by South African midfielder Steven Pieenar.

However, Dougie Freedman’s men responded less than 10 minutes later, with England Under-21 international Marvin Sordell guiding a finish past Tim Howard.

And it was unlikely hero Johnny Heitinga who netted a last-minute winner after the Netherlands international finished from close range to secure Everton’s passage.

“It was great to get through, that’s the job, but there has been many years when we’ve not got through in similar games,” Moyes told BBC Sport.

“I thought it was going to a replay and Bolton had done enough to earn it. In the second half we had most of the play without being creative and we needed to find another way of scoring the goal.”

Meanwhile, Freedman said that he was disappointed to be eliminated from the competition after the Trotters produced a good performance against their Premier League opponents.

“I’m disappointed in the result, but not the performance,” said Freedman.

“In the first 20 minutes we had a setback but we got on with it and played probably the best football we have done since I’ve been here.”
