Borussia Dortmund 0 Arsenal 1: Wenger thrilled by ‘mature’ display
Borussia Dortmund 0 Arsenal 1: Arsene Wenger hails "mature" display after Aaron Ramsey's goal clinches famous win
Arsene Wenger hailed his side’s “mature” performance after Aaron Ramsey’s second-half goal earned Arsenal a famous Champions League win at Borussia Dortmund.
After a goalless first half in which the home side had a number of chances to take the lead, the in-form Wales international headed home from close range in the 62nd minute to seal victory.
The Gunners are now top of Group F, level on points with second-placed Napoli after the Serie A side beat Marseille 3-2 on Wednesday.
And Wenger was thrilled with his side’s overall display as they became the first English team to win at Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion.
“Our focus pleased me because we were under consistent pressure from the first to the last minute and we didn’t make mistakes,” Wenger told Sky Sports.
“It was a very tight game, very difficult – but we didn’t give them any room to create chances.
“We had a little bit of a difficult period at the start of the second half but after that we came into the game and suddenly looked like we could score.
“Overall, it was a very mature performance.”
The Frenchman was pleased with his side’s defensive stability as they managed to successfully shut out last year’s runners-up.
He continued: “What I was concerned about is that it was a long time to go when we scored but after that we created chances – we could have scored a second goal. They tired a little bit as well.
“We knew at half-time that it was a question of keeping focus without making a mistake and letting our technical superiority come in at some stage of the game. It happened and again it was Ramsey who scored.
“We look stable defensively. We were under pressure tonight but we had a good mixture of tactical awareness and serene attitude in our play. Of course it’s also linked to the recent results of the team.”
