Borussia Dortmund boss Jürgen Klopp congratulated Bayern Munich after Arjen Robben’s dramatic late winner ended their 14-year wait to win the Champions League.

After a goalless first half, Mario Mandzukic put Bayern ahead at Wembley on the hour-mark when he tapped home Robben’s low cross.

Dortmund equalised seven minutes later when Ilkay Gundogan fired in his penalty following Dante’s foul on Marco Reus.

However, Robben stole in with a minute to play and tucked his shot past Roman Weidenfeller and into the bottom corner to secure victory.

“First of all congratulations to Bayern, as they won,” said Klopp. “After the game, you have to respect the result.

“I did not see the winning goal a second time, it was a free-kick and we were not in the right formation. It was late in the game, it was a really hard season for us and I saw that from 75 minutes on.

“We deserved to be in the final, we showed this tonight. That is not the most important thing, but it is important.”

Dortmund captain Weidenfeller added: “We’re proud to have given Bayern a real game tonight. We played well but it wasn’t meant to be.”

And Dortmund defender Mats Hummels conceded that Bayern, who were losing finalists in 2010 and 2012, deserved their win.

“The game was really close but Bayern deserved it,” said Hummels. “They were the better team in the second half.

“In the first 25 minutes we were the better team but could not score the goal we needed. We tired in the last few minutes, they get the cup and we don’t. Its the hardest game you can lose.”
