Jose Enrique is expected to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury after Brendan Rodgers confirmed that the Liverpool defender requires surgery.

The Spanish left-back picked up the injury against Manchester United in September and suffered a recurrence of the problem during the 4-0 victory over Fulham at Anfield earlier this month.

And Liverpool boss Rodgers has revealed that the former Newcastle full-back is set to face another long spell out of action.

“Jose Enrique has been struggling for a little while with an injury,” Rodgers told talkSPORT.

“He will probably need an operation. It’s a blow for us because he’s a very talented player.”

Speaking last month, Rodgers revealed that Enrique has been struggling with the knee problem for some time.

“Jose was injured. He’s had a problem all season with his knee and he’s struggled,” said Rodgers in October.

“In fairness to him, he’s put himself out for the team to go out and play. But he was suffering with it and we just felt it was best for him to come out and make it right.”
