Cardiff 1 West Brom 0: Mackay thrilled with ‘important’ victory

Malky Mackay hailed a vital victory for Cardiff City after his side sealed victory over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Peter Whittingham headed home the winner in the 65th minute to hand Cardiff a win which lifted them up into 14th place in the Premier League table.

And the City boss was delighted with his side’s display as they ground out a result against the Baggies.

“It was an important win for us against a team who are around about us in the league,” said Mackay.

“A clean sheet and a real good performance. I said to the boys at half-time to just have patience and grind them down, and I think we deserve it on the balance of play.”

Meanwhile, West Bromwich Albion boss Steve Clarke, whose side drop to 16th, was convinced that the Baggies did enough to earn at least a draw.

“It’s been a frustrating couple of weeks,” said Clarke. “I don’t think the performance was so bad that we deserved to lose the game but at the moment that’s the run we’re in.

“Over the course of the game we created enough chances to score. At the moment, when we defend well, like we did today, we still concede the goal which came from nowhere, really. Sometimes when you’re in a bad moment these things happen.

“We’re all hurting but the only solution is to work harder.”
