Oribe Peralta bagged a second-half winner as Mexico beat Cameroon in their opening Group A game.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Giovani dos Santos had two first-half strikes chalked off for offside and Samuel Eto’o hit the woodwork before Mexico’s top-scorer in qualification bagged a 61st-minute winner.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order as Mexico move into second place in Group A.

Former Arsenal defender and ITV pundit Lee Dixon (@LeeDixon2) is having a well-earned night off after working on the opening game: “Someone keep me posted on the Mexico game please. Signal not great”

Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given (@No1shaygiven) sympathises with Mexico’s former Spurs striker: “Got a feel for Dos Santos, 2 goals harshly disallowed. #MEXvCMR”

Ireland defender Sean St Ledger (@seanstledger12) reckons the officials should be sending themselves off: “Think the linesman could b going home early!!!”

Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg (@freddie) is getting frustrated with the officials too: “So excited to watch the #WorldCup2014 this year. But what is going on with the refs!!?”

Former Ireland midfielder Kevin Kilbane (@kdkilbane77) has his say: “Big pressure on the officials already.. Only 1 & 1/2 games into the #WorldCup2014 and they’ve got big decisions wrong. #bbcworldcup”

Swansea forward Wayne Routledge (@WayneRoutledge) feels Dos Santos’s pain: “Surely Gio Dos Santos luck has to change in the second half… #Robbed”

QPR midfielder Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) feels Mexico have been the better side: “Totally deserved lead for the Mexicans on balance of play. 1-0.”

Finally, Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick (@carras16) is tipping Javier Hernandez to come off the bench and score: “Money’s on @CH14_ to nick a goal here, come on Chich!!!”
